Celebrity judging panel and Kemps booth visitors to sample and vote on top two flavors – Land of 10,000 Licks and Pubcorn and Peanuts ice cream flavors
ST. PAUL, MINN. — August 22, 2011 — The final stage of the Kemps Next Hometown Favorite Flavor Contest is underway and the top two flavors are ready for sampling. Land of 10,000 Licks and Pubcorn and Peanuts are the final two flavors vying for the chance to be added to Kemps’ Hometown Favorites line-up and sold at grocery stores around Minnesota. Local residents dreamt up these flavors and now Minnesota State Fairgoers can vote on them at the Kemps booth.
“We had a great time reading through the hundreds of entries,” said Rachel Kyllo, vice president of marketing for Kemps. “There were so many tempting flavors that were perfect for our Hometown Favorites line, we can’t wait to see which one Kemps’ fans will choose to represent Minnesota.”
Fairgoers can stop by the Kemps booth on Machinery Hill at 1 p.m. daily, taste the two final flavors and cast a vote for their favorite. On Thursday, September 1 at 1 p.m., the grand prize winner will be chosen through a combination of fairgoer votes, online voting at www.kempsnextflavor.com and a celebrity judging panel at the fair. The judging panel will feature Kemps spokeswoman (and Joe Mauer’s mom) Teresa Mauer, Martha “Sweet Martha” Rossini Olson and the soon-to-be crowned Princess Kay of the Milky Way.
ICE CREAM LOVERS LEAD THE WAY
There were hundreds of ice cream flavors submitted and more than 4,100 votes were cast online to determine the top two finalists. Both flavors were developed by Kemps and will be ready for sampling at the Minnesota State Fair. Jennifer Folkens of Rogers came up with the Land of 10,000 Licks flavor, which includes sweet cream ice cream, thick swirls of caramel with bits of toffee and sea salt sprinkled throughout. The second flavor, Pubcorn and Peanuts, was submitted by Kelly Moritz of St. Paul and contains popcorn-flavored ice cream, crushed salted peanuts and ribbons of dark chocolate.
“When I created these flavors I wanted to stay true to the finalist’s original concept,” said Logan Julstrom, senior food technologist for Kemps. “I’m so proud of how the flavors turned out and I feel that either would make a great addition to the Kemps family of ice cream flavors.”
To develop the Minnesota Hometown Favorites line of flavors, Kemps revitalized past partnerships with other local icons, including Sweet Martha’s Cookies, Pearson’s Nut Goodie and the Minnesota Wild. The winning flavor will be added to this iconic lineup. The winner will receive $2,500, a year supply of their ice cream and their flavor will appear on store shelves in 2012.
